If you read newswire reports on why the JPY has turned bid in a risk off environment driven by weaker equities, you generally see it attributed to safe haven flows. One look at the Nikkei, which has weakened as well, is a head scratcher for me as to why Japan would be a place of safety amid global concerns. The term “safe haven” is a convenient one to use to explain price action in times of financial stress. It pays to take a closer look at why the JPY would firm during such times beyond just being a safe haven.
