Eurozone Heading to Deflation?
A major event in the week just ending was the release of August flash HICP (CPI) data on Friday's open. I always repeat what I hear from central banks that policy is not determined by a single number. It appears that this is not the case with the ECB. For the last few months they have focus attention on this single statistic. There is a reluctance at the central bank ever to take bold action because of the politics within the governing council and they seem to need an excuse to take action.
